Henry Yan, Contemporary Fine Artist and Art teacher

Henry Yan is a contemporary fine artist and a full-time art teacher at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He received his fine arts training in China and USA and has over 30 years of experience teaching drawing and oil painting. Henry offers workshops in both North America and Europe.

Henry's workshop teaches students the methods and procedures for drawing the figure/head/hand with charcoal. Through short and long pose practices, students will enhance their ability to accurately depict human proportions, anatomy, light and shadow to create three-dimensional forms. The course also covers various line work, edge control, lost and found techniques, composition, and design.

Different techniques introduced in Henry's book “Henry Yan’s Figure Drawing-Techniques and Tips”, will also be explained and practiced in class.

  • 4-Day workshop, June 22nd - 25th, 2025

  • 10am - 5pm, includes a one hour meal break

  • Urban Indigo Art and Design, 20405 Santa Maria Avenue, Castro Valley, CA 94546 Conveniently located in downtown Castro Valley across from many shops and eateries. 15 minute walk from Castro Valley BART. Free parking in our lot. Safe well lit area. Ground floor space.

Cost:

  • Registration is $760. Includes Instruction and live models 6 hours per day for 4 days

Supply list:

  • Charcoal pencil: HB, 2B, 4B and 6B
  • Vine charcoal or willow: soft
  • Kneaded eraser

  • Drawing paper: medium or smooth surface 18"x 24"
  • Newsprint pad (smooth) 18"x 24"

Cancellation Before Class Start Date:

  • 4 weeks Before Class Start Date: 100% refund is offered, minus a non-refundable $50 deposit.
  • 3 Weeks Before Class Start Date: 75% refund is offered, minus a non-refundable $50 deposit.
  • 2 Weeks Before Class Start Date: 50% refund is offered, minus a non-refundable $50 deposit.
  • Less Than 2 Weeks Before Class Start Date: Unfortunately, no refund is offered.

*All fees include a $50.00 non-refundable $50 deposit.

*Pre registration required for the workshop.

*The deadline for workshop payments is 20 days before the workshop start date.

*Spaces are allotted based on availability at the time of payment. Your registration of a class/workshop is not guaranteed until your payment is received.

*Workshops/Classes are non-refundable/prorated/credited due to failure to attend, planned absences, illnesses, injuries, vacations or any unforeseen events. 

*If Urban Indigo Art and Design cancels any class, workshop or program, all paid tuition will be refunded for the canceled days.

*If you cannot attend for any reason, you will be responsible to find a suitable replacement and must notify and be approved by Urban Indigo Art and Design.

*Full refunds are given for all classes canceled by Urban Indigo Art and Design prior to the workshop.

*Workshops may be cancelled by Urban Indigo Art and Design prior to the start date of the workshop.  Please make a note of this in connection with making traveling plans; Urban Indigo Art and Design  shall not have liability or responsibility for any student loss associated with travel costs or travel reservations and/or any other related costs associated with attendance at any workshop, program, lecture or session, regardless of whether such class is terminated by Urban Indigo Art and Design or the student/attendee.

*A minimum enrollment of 10 must be met.  When the enrollment requirement is not met, the class may be cancelled unless an agreement is reached between Urban Indigo Art and Design and the instructor.

Urban Indigo Art and Design reserves the right to post and display copies of students’ artwork or to use student/attendee photographs for Urban Indigo Art and Design events/program/workshop publicity.

  • Cameras are not allowed. Please keep phones on silent and put away while model is disrobed.

  • Please dress appropriately; the building has A/C but dome heaters will be used to keep the model comfortable and the room could get warm.
