In this class students will learn about the core fundamentals of art. Students will learn how to properly make shapes, construct images from imagination, world building, and more. Every season we will have a new subject and a new theme, encouraging students to return and continue to strengthen their learning with new, fun, and exciting projects. We encourage artists both beginners and advance to join.
This class is a great introduction to the world of art. Skills you learn in this class are transferable across all mediums. We cover topics like: How to test your materials, How to make a perfect circle, How to foreshorten, and much more.
For advanced artists, this is a good way to commit to drawing once a week. Being part of a community is a great way to keep yourself accountable and motivate you to practice your craft. Although projects have a theme and a subject, students are encouraged to explore their own style and methods after learning the core principles.

Artist Biography
Jose Diaz is a lifelong artist and experienced art instructor with over eight years of professional and teaching expertise. From exhibiting his surrealist art at the Salvador Dali Museum, to working with a private writer to make an action comic. He has spent the past year refining and teaching his Figure Drawing skill to adults through the Hayward Recreation Department and countless hours in the workshop at Urban Indigo.
Jose's teaching philosophy focuses on mastering the fundamentals through engaging projects focused around students interests, and a step-by-step approach. By emphasizing essential concepts such as gesture, structure, and perspective, students develop a robust visual library, empowering them to draw confidently from their imagination. In Jose's classes, students benefit from personalized, one-on-one mentorship and the chance to learn collaboratively within a group setting. By working alongside artists of varying skill levels, students are inspired to grow and refine their artistic abilities.
”I believe everyone can make art, and learning advanced techniques doesn’t have to be difficult or overwhelming. I believe you learn more by drawing what you like, and using the tools and techniques we learn in class to make your own art using your favorite subjects. All forms of art are welcomed in the classroom. From a depiction of a wacky cartoon character, to the curvy lines of the human form. I believe in fostering a no judgment space in the classroom, we’re here to have fun and make art. :) So let’s enjoy ourselves and get to know one another.” - Mr. DiazDetails:
